The ID is "id: @site.chwSys" but later there is “systemRef: @chwSys” without “site.”
I thought the period was "just another allowed character" and had no other special meaning. Is the example wrong or am I missing some rules about "references/relationships/containment"?

Those appear to typos. The ids should just be opaque identifiers where the dot has no meaning and are all consistent with regards to cross-references. We will fix the docs, thanks for pointing it out
